- To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
-
- Hi,
- I am sending this mail for a friend, kt5x, who does not have
- internet access. He has a Collins KWM-380 transceiver and a Yaesu ST7000
- amp. He would like to conenct his computer between to two so the
- computer can check the transceivers frequency and when he changes
- bands the computer will issue the commands to his yaesu amp to switch
- bands.
- In otherwords, the computer will allow him to switch bands
- from his transceiver without having to touch his amp.
-
- The problem is that he does not have the computer interface
- information for his Collins transceiver for either the hardware connection
- and the software commands.
-
- He also does not have the commands needed to talk to his Yaesu amp.
- He has written Yaesu several but has never gotten a response.
-
- Can anyone out in netland help him out?

- HI,
-
- I am working on writing an article whose purpose it will be to help new
- hams in their search for used HF gear.
-
- I am very interested in personal opinions/comments that might help in
- this matter.
-
- here is the proposed outline:
-
- HF Rigs, Buying Used Gear
-
- - Some tubes vs all transistors and what it means to ham
- - what bands does it cover (WARC?)
- - what modes does it have (CW/SSB/FM/FSK)
- - built in vs. external power supply
- - size
- - price range
- - extras: RIT,XIT, adjustable IF, filtering, computer control for banswitching and such,
- option available, dual VFO and its use, speech processing, other
- - good bets in different price ranges
- - is rig especially good on one mode (cw vs ssb)
- - can rig be easily turned down to QRP levels (optional section)
- - built in cw keyer or filters
-
- thanks...

- Just a note, the Kenwood 599 twins do not have a matching power supply

-
- If you are looking into one for your home, yes you need a supply. In your
- car, of course, you just hook into the 12v system. A cheap way to operate
- a 12v amp in your house is to buy a decent size Gell-Cell (SLA) and float a
- charger across it. The battery will give you all the current you need and
- can be obtained from swap meets etc. The charger does not need to have a
- high current output (1 amp would suffice). One thing to keep in mind is that
- using this method, you can't talk all day long and expect the battery to hold
- out. SLA's can be deep cycled, but will last much longer if you can avoid
- deep cycling.
